Russian Circles - Station

Russian Circles is a three piece instrumental rock/metal band from Chicago. Similar to fellow Chicago residents Pelican, Russian Circles play epic, sprawling music which runs the gamut of heavy discordant metal, to soft delicate passages. They are also known for their energetic live shows, which include tours with Minus the Bear, Chin Up Chin Up, Mono, and Pelican as well as an appearance at the 2006 SXSW.[1]. They were also the opening band for Tool while playing in the United Kingdom for their 2007 tour. Formed in late 2004 by guitarist Mike Sullivan and bassist Colin DeKuiper (both formerly of another instrumental band Dakota/Dakota) they quickly recruited Dave Turncrantz, formerly of St. Louis band Riddle of Steel. When performing live, the band is noted for being able to replicate and even expand upon their recorded material through Sullivan and DeKuiper's use of sampling and loop pedals.

In the autumn of 2007, it was announced that the band had parted ways with Colin DeKuiper. As a result, the bass tracks on their new album, titled Station, will be handled by ex-Botch/These Arms Are Snakes bass player Brian Cook

The Black Angels - Directions To See A Ghost (2008)

A psychedelic rock band from Austin, Texas, formed in May 2004. Their name derives from the Velvet Underground song "The Black Angel's Death Song".

Friday, August 5th 2007, they played at Lollapalooza in Chicago. Among other venues, they have played at SXSW 2006 & 2008 and All Tomorrow's Parties 2008.

The group's debut LP Passover was generally well received in the underground independent rock community and was noted for its dark tones and lyrical content. A review of the Black Angels album Passover described them as "Walking in the shadows cast by Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized mastermind Jason Pierce" and compared them to The Warlocks reminiscent of both The Velvet Underground and the 13th Floor Elevators. The band's icon is a stylized/high-contrast image of Nico.

THANX!

First off ...I want to thank all the Mud readers for the kind words. THANK YOU.

I've been getting a lot of requests lately to re-up dead links from the archives. Not too sound lazy, but the time I get to spend on the blog is limited. Also, the fact that there are "link killers" out there in full force these days, doesn't really motivate me. It seems they kill links pretty quick now. But if I do get some down time, I'll try and fill the the requests. If I do, I'll just "re-up" a new post. I won't be updating the dead links.

So thanks again for reading. - Wino's house

Mazzy Star - She Hangs Brightly

For the ladies of Mud.

Well I guess It's been awhile since I posted a recording for the ladies who read this blog. Here's Mazzy Star, an American dream pop band. Rooted in the California Paisley Underground movement of the 1980s. Hope Sandoval on vocals and David Roback on guitar and vocals.

Roback (guitar), along with his brother Steve, was one of the main architects of leading Los Angeles psychedelic revival band, the Rain Parade in the 80's.

This is not for everyone, but I think the ladies will like it. File under Dream Pop, Psychedelic Folk, Psychedelic Rock...and hey...my 6 year old daughter loves the vocals...(a good sign I guess)

FOR THE WOMEN. ENJOY!

The Black Keys - Attack and Release (2008)

The Black Keys are a blues-rock duo consisting of Dan Auerbach (vocals and guitar) and Patrick Carney (drums) from Akron, Ohio.

Disc Review
THE BLACK KEYS
Attack & Release Rating: NNNNN
Tim Perlich

When Jack White hears this amazing Danger Mouse-produced recording by the Black Keys, he’ll thank his lucky stars he’s got the Raconteurs to fall back on, because Attack & Release has just rendered the White Stripes completely irrelevant.

Any concerns that the Gnarls Barkley braintrust might adversely affect the riotously raw blues-rock sound cultivated by the Akron duo of Daniel Auerbach and Patrick Carney are unfounded. The gutbucket grittiness is still there, but the Black Keys are working with a much more evolved sense of song structure, dynamics, time, tension and texture, which enables them to update classic R&B and blues in creative ways while maintaining the essential Black Keys thrust.

What’s most impressive about Attack & Release is how they’ve raised their vocal and compositional game in accord with the sonic enhancements, bringing an unexpected poignancy to their earthy funkiness. Every track is a stunner. - Tim Perlich

Charles Bukowski - 90 Minutes in Hell (1966)

Thanks to GP2 for this find.

Recorded in 1966 and issued on Steve Richmond's Earth Records in 1977.
There were supposedly 500 copies, but most people think that's an overestimate.

Bukowski reads segments from his books and has a few other rants as well. Its easy to suspect when listening to these recordings that the man was quite drunk when he made them. A real collectors item.
