Led Zeppelin - O'Keefe Centre Toronto (1969-11-02)

In 1954, philanthropist, horsebreeder, and developer E.P. Taylor, the head of the O'Keefe Brewing Company and Argus Corporation, offered to build a much-needed performing arts centre for the city of Toronto. "the house that beer built." This 3,000 plus seat arts centre, would be home to up and comming bands of the late 60's and 70's. Just before the golden age of arena rock. The only acts I saw was Sammy Davis Jr and Roger Waters. In 1996 it was renamed The Hummingbird Centre.

So here's a post for the late great philanthropist - E.P. Taylor. THANKS DUDE!

Chris Cornell - 2006 - Unplugged in Sweden

Chris Cornell was born July 20, 1964. Best known as the lead singer, guitarist and songwriter of the rock band Soundgarden (1984-1997) and later Audioslave (2001-2007). He began his musical career as a drummer, before moving on to become a singer and guitarist. He also enjoyed acclaim as a solo performer with his first solo album Euphoria Morning (1999). Its follow-up Carry On is set for release in June 2007.

Cornell was born in Seattle, Washington and lived there in his childhood. His Irish Catholic parents are Ed Boyle (a pharmacist) and Karen Cornell (an accountant). Cornell's last name used to be Boyle, but after his parents divorced he and his siblings took his mother's maiden name. He suffered from a severe case of depression during his teenage years, rarely leaving the house. At one point, he spent a whole year without leaving his house, during which time he would play drums and guitar.

"My lifestyle was transformed after many years of drinking a lot, isolating myself a lot and going into long periods of depression

Along with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains, Soundgarden became one of the biggest and most successful bands from Seattle's emerging grunge scene in the early 1990s. Cornell became known for the incredible power and range of his voice, and for his dark lyrics often dealing with themes of death and existentialism. Following 1988's Ultramega OK, and 1989's Louder than Love, Soundgarden finally found widespread success in 1991 with the double-platinum album Badmotorfinger.

In late 1994, after touring in support of the album Superunknown, doctors discovered that Cornell had severely strained his vocal cords. Soundgarden cancelled several shows to avoid causing any permanent damage. During this time he collaborated with shock rocker Alice Cooper on Cooper's album The Last Temptation, and together with him wrote the song "Stolen Prayer". Due to tensions within the band, Soundgarden announced it was disbanding on April 9, 1997.

Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff

Mudhoney formed in Seattle in 1988. The band is named after a Russ Meyer movie, Mudhoney. The band was an inspiration and influence on many musicians, including Kurt Cobain of Nirvana.

In the summer of 1988, the band released their first single, "Touch Me I'm Sick", on the Sub Pop label. They also put out the EP Superfuzz Bigmuff. The album defined what the "Seattle Sound" was and what grunge was going to be. Mudhoney were also Sub Pop's flagship band before Nirvana hit huge with Nevermind. The band enjoyed moderate success in the United States although overseas in Europe they had a few tours. Sonic Youth, who were fans of the band, had invited them to join them for a tour in England in 1989. After this tour Superfuzz Bigmuff landed on the British indie charts and they received a fair amount of press coverage in Europe. Following the success the band released their first full length album Mudhoney in 1989 (also on the Sub Pop label).

The Smashing Pumkins - Gish

You have to put this record in context.

It was recorded from December 1990 to March 1991 in Butch Vig's Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin, and released on May 28, 1991. In a time when the charts were full of Sinead O'Connor, Madonna, Jon Bon Jovi, Skid Row, Milli Vanilli and Unskinny Bop by Poison. The Pumkins were in the studio recording a new consciousness called GISH. Gish was The Smashing Pumpkins' debut release. The album was named after silent movie actress Lillian Gish. "I Am One", "Rhinoceros", "Bury Me", and "Daydream" appear on demos recorded by the band in early 1989.
James Iha has mentioned that he bought his first Gibson Les Paul guitar for the recording of Gish. He used these model guitars almost exclusively until 1998's Adore

If you love rock guitar, you'll dig this. Fantastic record! ENJOY!
